Flight by Robert Burleigh describes the amazing flight of Charles Lindbergh when he became the first person to fly solo, non-stop across the Atlantic – more than 80 years ago! It was incredible to realize that he stayed awake for 3 days to achieve his dream. His flight took 33 and a half hours – we all wanted to know how he went to the bathroom! What an inspiring story of perseverance.
Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot by Margot Theis Raven is also about an American pilot who brought hope and inspiration to children during the Berlin airlift of 1948 – 3 years after WWII finished. Lt Halvorsen made a life-changing decision to drop candy from his plane when he flew over West Berlin when they had very little food to eat. One of the children who benefited from his kindness, Mercedes, later became a pilot herself.
